Deck-Attached Pergola in Maryland

Our client in Maryland had a beautiful deck built in his back yard, and decided he wanted a nice shaded space over the sitting area. This project was a bit different than our “typical” pergola projects, in that the pergola was entirely supported by the deck structure and didn’t have its own footings. While not practical for all decks, the robust existing deck structure made the pergola addition much easier.

This project was made more complicated due to the bedroom window directly above the pergola, which required a bit of extra detailing to deal with the window ledge. Also, the window location necessitated a lower head clearance than we normally specify, pushing the limits of code acceptability. However, we think the result is a cozy sitting space that beautifully compliments the existing deck!
