1.) Concrete Piers and Post Bases

Accurate layout of the concrete Piers and Post Bases is the first step in building your pergola. Spend some time here and save a lot of headaches later.

2.) Posts

With the Piers and Post Bases accurately laid out and installed, the Posts are next. These will need to be cut to the correct length, and the beam seats at the tops will also need to be cut prior to installation.

3.) Main and Secondary Beams

After the Posts are installed and plumbed, the Main and Secondary Beams are installed to tie everything together. These form the main load-bearing frame of the pergola.

4.) Braces

Diagonal Braces are required in most cases to keep the pergola from moving laterally under wind and seismic loading. These tie between the Posts and the Beams.

5.) Rafters

The Rafters span across the width of the pergola and form the first shade layer. They are fastened to the Main Beams.

6.) Purlins

The final step in building your pergola is installation of the Purlins. These run perpendicular to and fasten to the Rafters and are the second shade layer.

Adding a Roof to Your Pergola

If you want to add more protection from the sun and inclement weather, a polycarbonate roof is a great option.
