Redwood Pergola in Southern California

This 16ft x 27ft redwood pergola was designed for a Southern California home and built over an existing patio, blending seamlessly with the house’s layout. The width includes a deliberate jog to accommodate a bathroom bump-out, and the framing was carefully notched to work cleanly around an existing fireplace chimney. Wider 20” rafter spacing keeps the structure feeling open while still providing strong visual rhythm overhead. The natural redwood adds warmth and durability that suits the Southern California climate.

The project was built by a father as a gift for his daughter and son-in-law, making it as meaningful as it is functional. Permitting moved surprisingly fast for California, which helped the project come together without delays. The result is a custom-fit pergola that feels intentional in every detail, tailored to both the home’s constraints and the family it was built for.
